BIOGRAPHY

Edward TEGART(1823-1905)

Edward Tegart was born 13 Jan 1826' in Tecumseth Township of Simcoe County, Ontario or Upper Canada as it was known then. He was the third of five children of James Montgomery Tegart and his wife Margery Anderson (v. 1 #2). He grew up in Tecumseth on a farm near what is now Tottenham, the farm of his father being described as of Lot 8 Cone 4.

Edward married firstly Margaret Milligan at Tecumseth on the 13th day of December 1849. Not much is known regarding her but what has been handed down in the family which is very sketchy and what has been obtained from tombstone records.

"Margaret, wife of Edward Tegart, daughter of James & Jane Anne Milligan, died Jan. 16, 1853, aged 25 yr. also two infant children of Edward & Margaret Tegart"

No other records are known to exist regarding the marriage and family of Edward and Margaret. However, when one combines the above information from the gravesite at Mt. Tegart Cemetery with that of family "talk," the following may be a representation of what that first family may have been:

Following the death of Margaret, Edward remarried about 1856 and purchased a farm next to his brother, Alexander Tegart (see Vol 1, No. 3) in Nottawasaga Township near Singhampton, south of Collingwood.

His second wife was Isabella Robinson, daughter of William(?) and Ann Robinson. The family of Edward and Isabella is much easier to follow although there are still a few areas yet to be researched. The following information was obtained from the various census' taken from 1871 to 1901 and has provided valuable information regarding Edward's family.

The travels of Edward and Isabella's family is one of hardship and difficulty as they sought out the blessing of land out west. The location in which they are found before heading West is in Nottawasaga just north-east of Singhampton (NE¼ Lot 21 Cone 2) some time prior to 1871. They remained there until about the 17th of August 1880 at which time he purchased property just outside Sault Ste. Marie (Sec. 9 Torentorus S½).
