Biography

Alexander TEGART(1820-1884)

Alexander Tegart was born in County Armagh, Ireland, in 1820. He was the eldest son of James Montgomery Tegart and his wife Margery Anderson. He came to Canada as a small child with his mother and younger brother James around 1824 to 1825. Research would indicate that his father and/or grandfather preceeded them 1822. They settled in Tecumseth, Ontario.

Alexander married Eliza Atkins:

"Alexander Tegart & Eliza Atkin, Home Dist., Tecumseth & West Gwillimbury townships, by license, 20 Jan 1842, witness Andrew Cavanaugh and Robert Atkin."

"9 Feb. 1842 issue; 20th Jan., Alexander Tegart of Tecumseth & Eliza Atkins of W. Gwillimbury. (Rev. J. Baxter)"

She was born in 1823 or 1824 in County Limerick, Ireland, the daughter of Robert and Mary Fletcher Atkins. They were Irish Palatines who came to Canada in 1825 and settled in West Gwilliambury, Ontario. Alexander and Eliza lived in that general area of Ontario where they had a family of four children, Robert, James Atkins, Thomas and Eliza Jane. Eliza Atkins Tegart died May 6, 1850 of childbed fever following the birth of her only daughter.

Alexander married again about 1852. His second wife was Ann Walker, who had also been born apparently in Ireland about 1830. They lived in Singhampton, Nottawasaga Township. They had eight children named Marjory, Mary Jane, Alexander Walker, George Jackson, Susan, Edward, Ann and Arthur Henry.

"Tegart, Alex., farmer, and formerly Township Counsilor, Owns and resides on Lot 20, Con.12, 200 acres valued at $8,000. Native of Ireland. Born 1820.. Family settled on Simcoe Co. 1823. P.O. address, Singhampton."
